Khadi Cotton, Handmade by Yarn Yarn

What is Khadi cotton?

Khadi cotton sprung from the Khadi movement started by Ghandi in the 1920’s to promote an ideology – an idea that the Indians could be self-reliant on cotton and be free from foreign cloth and clothing. Ghandi began promoting the spinning of cotton yarn using a charka to support self-reliance and rural self-employment amongst women in villages. The resulting khadi cotton yarn is soft like silk and by far the most luxurious cotton yarn.

This Khadi cotton makes the most luxurious sweater, hat, throw, shawl and other such luxury items. Knit, crochet, weave with this unique artisan yarn. The cotton is grown in the villages where these women spin.

Each 100g skein is approx 180 yards.

Yarn Yarn prides itself with handmade craft supplies and eco-friendly, recycled yarns that are fair trade and handmade by women’s co-operatives and small communities in rural India. Many of their yarns are made from waste leftover from the sari mills in India. Every sale of their products helps to support and provide sustainable living within these communities.
